The Central Heating and Cooling Plant is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Throughout the year, six high-pressure water tube boilers generate steam for heating systems, humidifiers, sterilizers and digesters, swimming pools, and domestic hot water use. This steam is distributed to university buildings and outside agencies through approximately 18 kilometres of steam piping. The plant produces nearly one billion pounds of steam annually to service 483,000 square meters of building space.
During the summer, four centrifugal chillers produce chilled water which is used to air condition 343,870 square metres of buildings on campus. While human comfort may appear to be the goal, the prime concern is conditioned air for animals, plants and research of all types.
