Facilities operates a district steam system. All steam is generated with a central heating plant. High pressure steam is distributed throughout campus in buried services or through the tunnels and crawlspaces. Once in a building the steam pressure is reduced and used for many varied functions. Along with the production of steam is the return of condensate to the heating plant. Condensate is produced as the steam is used (cooled). This condensate returns to the heating plant and is reused. Should steam be seen billowing from a manhole or from a pipe anywhere do NOT approach. Call Facilities to advise so appropriate action can be taken.
