July 28, 2015

Completion targeted fall 2015.

  • On the main floor, the tiling was completed.  The maple had been installed on the wall in the common area.  The feature wall would be installed in early August 2015.  The elevator was ready other than installation of the telephone.  The offices spaces were completed. 

  • Work was underway on the design of the receptionist’s desk.  The large wood slab from the elm trees off the site for the top of the receptionist desk was still not dry enough to install. 

  • The second floor was nearing completion.  Installation of the wood on the second floor feature wall was starting.  The offices had been completed and work was being finalized on the seminar room.  The glass handrail was being installed.  The wall system was installed. 

  • In the basement, lighting was being installed in the Health Sciences tunnel.  The steam tunnel insulation was being completed.  The electrical room was completed.  The storage room was being completed. 

  • Work on the rough grading for the landscaping was being redone.  Three silver maples would be planted after the top soil had been installed.  Plans being developed for use of indigenous plants and grasses.

March 25, 2015 Update on project progress to date:
  • Mechanical was approximately 84% completed and electrical was approximately 90% completed. 
  • Work was progressing on the roof with installation of the stone on the parapets underway.
  • Masonry - The purple “bead work” diamond shapes were being installed. 
  • On the third floor, the sprinkler lines and wiring for the air handling units was being installed.  The ceiling was installed and painted at the top of stair #1.  The first light fixture was installed.
  • On the second floor, the steel framing was erected.  The drywalling was done except for around the windows.  Steel studding was completed.  The ceiling was drywalled and primed.  Floor tiles were set in place.  Mechanical would remain at 90% completed until the ceilings were completed.  The kitchen was boarded out. 
  • On the first floor, the steel studding was framed.  The conduit for electrical was 90% completed and wire was being pulled.  The mechanical sprinkler lines were installed with the exception of the stairwells.  The elevator was being installed.
  • In the basement, the ceiling was drywalled, primed and ready to paint. 
January 5, 2015 Progress on site:
  • Roofing - The roof work was still underway.
  • Masonry - The masonry stone work was 95% completed. 
  • Interior of Building - The mechanical work was 76% completed.  The electrical work was 86% completed. 
August 28, 2014 Site currently very busy as most subcontractors were now mobilized on site.
  • Roof - The steel roof decking installed. Some of the drywall and vapour barrier was being installed on the roof. 
  • Second Floor - Scaffolding erected to fill in second floor open space; which would allow work to start on the framing of the cove area. Steel stud wall framing starting on the second floor.
  • First Floor - Steel stud wall framing was nearly completed on the first floor.  The work completed started to show the shape of the offices within the space.  Electrical rough-ins were underway.  Chilled water lines were being laid out.
  • Basement - More mechanical installations were being completed.  The shaft from the basement to the third floor, which had been open, was now almost full of pipe and duct work.  Sprinkler lines were being installed.
  • Masonry - Stone was now being installed on the building.  The purple stone would be low luster tiles which were available from a local source. 
  • Landscaping - The contractor had marked the new paths.  Adjustments had been made to the path as required to protect one tree on the site.  Changes had also been made to the planned bike storage area to protect another tree on site. 
March 12, 2014

The tunnels structure was 93% complete with a small portion of the concrete roof of the Health Sciences tunnel remaining to be completed. The roof of the tunnel was completed when the contractor poured the concrete for other half of the second floor on March 8, 2014.  With the completion of the last portion of the Health Sciences tunnel, the tunnel would be structurally complete.  The first floor concrete slab was completed. Some concrete walls between the first and second floor had been formed and poured.  The second floor was completely formed with concrete poured on the west half of slab.  The east half of slab was poured on March 8, 2014. Forming of the complete mechanical room floor slab was currently underway. After several months of extremely cold weather in December 2013 and January 2014, Clark Builders had reported a further two week loss in the construction schedule; from October 24, 2014 to November 3, 2014.

December 6, 2013

The tunnels are almost complete.  The Arts tunnel structure is complete and the Health Sciences tunnel is approximately 85% complete.  Work progressing on the pour for the first floor slab.  The forms were currently up and the reinforcing bars were being installed. First floor slab was cast on November 27, 2013. Concrete walls for first floor are being formed with concrete cast scheduled for before the end of December 2013.

August 15, 2013

The excavation and piling completed. The capped end of the existing Health Science Tunnel was removed.  The existing Arts Pedestrian tunnel was cut into.  Contractor is prepping the area for the concrete slab. Forming of the walls would begin shortly after this slab was cast.  Forming of the walls for the basement of the Gordon Oakes Redbear Student Centre would begin in the next couple of weeks.

July 2, 2013 Construction commenced.
June 21, 2013 Pipe ceremony, sod turning and dedication at site.

June 5, 2013 Letter of Intent issued to Clark Builders for the construction of the facility.
May 7, 2013 Tender was closed December 18, 2012 and tenders came in over budget. The Request for Tender process was stopped and negotiations were undertaken with the four original bidding Contractors.
March 5, 2013 Board 2A Approval
October 17, 2012 Design review to be done by September 2012 with tender advertisement in October 2012. Completion date of project to be approximately summer 2014.
June 26, 2012 Funding sources for shortfall being pursued. Some infrastructure work to be undertaken in early spring. Design scheduled to be done by end of June 2012 with Tender tentatively in July 2012.  Chilled water lines to Murray Building relocated.  Working on relocating the buried phone cable. Water line will need to be relocated in Contract. Completion date to be confirmed when tenders received.
